Making the impossible possible, every day, is her job: As Personal Assistant Manager at Breidenbacher Hof, Susanne Köhler works around the clock to fulfill the diverse wishes of her hotel guests. A certified hotel manager, she speaks English, French and Russian, has years of experience in the hotel industry, and knows just how she and her team can make visitors’ stays unforgettable.
The work of a “Personal Assistant” at one of the most exclusive hotels in Düsseldorf is challenging. What does the staff need to do in order to ensure that everything runs smoothly at a luxury hotel?
The Personal Assistant Service of the Capella Hotel Group, which includes Breidenbacher Hof, is a clear USP in the luxury hotel industry. Founder Horst Schulze did not want a traditional concierge service. What we do as Personal Assistants (PA) goes far above and beyond: We are a good friend, adviser, and butler for the guest. For me, a PA needs to be authentic and absolutely reliable at all times, enjoy the career, and give the guest the feeling that his or her needs are most important. Before guests arrive, we call them personally and ask everything we need to know in order to provide a totally relaxing, problem-free stay with us. This can range from people’s favorite kind of flowers in the hotel room, to personal shopping sessions after business hours.
What should a hotel guest at Breidenbacher Hof not miss?
I warmly recommend our spa to every guest. With a swimming pool, steam bath, Finnish saunas, fitness and relaxation rooms, and our Schnitzler Beauty Lounge with exclusive treatments, guests can find peace and rejuvenate based on their individual preferences. Another highlight is our Royal Floor on the 9th floor. It’s the ultimate in luxury and comfort – and the view of Düsseldorf’s skyline is just breathtaking. And then, of course, there is our Living Room – the heart of the hotel and cozy living room for our guests, where you’ll also regularly find the PAs.
Why do not only hotel guests visit Breidenbacher Hof?
Locals and people not staying overnight also enjoy the fantastic service at Breidenbacher Hof. We simply want to be good hosts, regardless whether our guests are staying with us or visiting for an evening. For the people in Düsseldorf, our brasserie “1806” has especially become a part of the local color. Here, guests find a unique combination of regional and French cuisine. The stylish and recently remodeled Capella Bar is also very popular. It has just the right mix of design, music, atmosphere, and drinks. Then there is our Cigar Lounge with a superb selection of cigars, complemented by first-class wine and whisky. People spread the word – which, of course, greatly pleases us.
Are there unforgettable moments?
I have certainly experienced lots of crazy things during the many years I have spent at Breidenbacher Hof. Naturally it can at first be disconcerting when an older Russian guest approaches you early in the morning and requests marmot ointment for his rheumatism – and not just a tube of it, but 3.5 kg. But it’s the emotional experiences one remembers most strongly. One guest wanted to propose to his girlfriend at our hotel and he asked me to pick out the engagement ring. In such moments, you sense how much trust the guest has in you. So I have indeed collected many pleasant memories over the years.
